Religion - The One, the Light
The One, The Light
Worship of the One is a monotheistic religion. Followers of the One (alternatively called “The Light,”) believe that he is a benevolent creator of the universe who wants what is best for his children. They are taught to be pious and charitable, and to fight against evil in all of its forms. Everyday worship of the One is a straightforward giving of thanks and prayer, but there are several different “Orders” that follow differing aspects of the deity and concentrate on specific domains.
The Candlekeepers concentrate on the Knowledge Domain and spend their time in scholarly pursuits. The Candlekeepers contains many scribes, monks, scholars, and sages who study primarily theology but often branch out into other areas of expertise.
The Order of the Healing Hand often call themselves Hospitalers. They concentrate on the Domain of Life, and are known as great healers. They often travel the lands performing miracles, curing sicknesses and healing grievous wounds, and the most powerful are even able to bring back the dead if the One’s will is not complete in their life.
The Order of the Bright Morning Sun, or the Lightwardens, concentrate on the Light Domain. They are the banishers of darkness, exorcists, and fierce opponents of undead and fiends.
The Order of Creation, concentrate on the Nature Domain. They see their main role as being the stewards and caretakers of the creation of the One. They preserve the natural order of things and battle against those who would abuse the natural order of the world. They often choose a particular aspect of nature and call themselves the Wardens or Keepers of it.
The Order of Thunder, or the Thunderlords, concentrate on the Tempest Domain. They believe they are the righteous hand of the One to punish evildoers. They call down the power and fury of storms, which they believe are often sent to cleanse or set right something the One does not approve of.
The Order of Many Faces is an unofficial part of the Church of the One, not recognized or approved of by most in the clergy. They concentrate on the Trickery Domain and are not a formalized or publically accepted order. Those who follow the Order of Many Faces believe that sometimes the Thunderlords are too indiscriminate, and sometimes it takes a little deception and subtlety to punish a particular wrongdoer. It is widely questioned whether they are even a true part of the faith, as many of their practices run counter to church teachings, but it cannot be denied that they possess divine power from somewhere.
The Crusaders is the order that concentrates on the War Domain. They believe that enemies of the faith and those who do evil need to be met by the sword. They generally leave the compassion and forgiveness to other orders, but that is not to say that they cannot possess those qualities as well. They are often attached to military contingents or become adventurers seeking evil to smite.
